Williams Congratulates Kendall Tennis Club
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has congratulated the Kendall Tennis Club on winning the Tennis Australia’s AOBlitz online competition to become the Australia’s best tennis town.
Kendall was the most nominated town in Australia by participants of the competition.
“This is a fantastic win for the Club and the Club’s Committee led by President Wendy Hudson,” Mrs Williams said.
“The result of the online competition win which was backed so well by the Hastings community means that tennis superstar Rafal Nadal will be playing for Kendall during the Australian Open.
“If Nadal wins the Australian Open, he will be coming to Kendall to help the town celebrate the win which would be an historical coup for the Club!
“While Kendall is one of the most progressive tennis club’s in regional Australia, it has been fighting for years to get enough funding to increase the number of courts from three to eight courts.
“I have been working very closely with Wendy and her Committee members to try and secure much needed funding for the expansion.
“One stumbling block had been the delay in signing over State Rail Authority Land to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to accommodate the expansion of the tennis courts. Pleasingly that has now been finalised, so the next step is getting more money for the project.
“As recently as December last year, I met with the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Gabrielle Upton and representatives from her department seeking to identify funding options and assistance for the Kendall Tennis Club.
“Minister Upton was very impressed by the Club’s vision, determination and success particularly with their junior tennis program.
“I will continue to work with the Minister to try and achieve as much funding as possible to finally see the expansion program become a reality,” Mrs Williams said.
