Scam Warning Targeting Mid North Coast

Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams is warning people on the Mid North Coast not to be fooled by the latest email scam doing the rounds.

“Recipients of an email which claims to be from the Australian Taxation Office are being warned not to open it or download any information,” Mrs Williams said.

“The emails say that people have been determined to be eligible to receive a tax refund of $491.00 and requests personal information, banking or credit card information.

“It also asks the recipient to download a Tax Return Form and follow instructions to lodge an application for money,” Mrs Williams said.

“This is a bogus scheme and will potentially infect a person’s computer with a virus or a malicious program.

“The Australian Taxation Office does not send emails requesting personal information and if anyone gets such an email they should delete it immediately.

“I am astounded at the lengths some people will go to attempting to rip people off or to cause damage to their computers.

“There has been a spate of email scams recently and people need to be aware that something that looks too good to be true usually is,” Mrs Williams said.

If anyone has been the victim of this scam involving the Australian Taxation Office, you should notify the ATO immediately as your personal details including your Tax File Number may be compromised.
