Renewable Energy Boost For Lord Howe Island
Member for Port Macquarie and Parliamentary Secretary for Renewable Energy, Leslie Williams has today welcomed the announcement that Lord Howe Island will no longer have to rely solely on diesel generation to power the Island.
Following a funding commitment of $4.5 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), a hybrid renewable energy project will be established on Lord Howe Island which will see 1MW of renewable energy generation and storage built.
“This is an exciting opportunity for Lord Howe Island to greatly reduce its reliance on diesel generation,” Mrs Williams said.
“It is fantastic that such an iconic world heritage listed Island is now at the forefront of increased sustainability when it comes to energy production.
“By combining solar and wind generation with energy storage capabilities, the Island will reduce its dependence on diesel generation by 70% which will also provide an economic benefit to local residents and visitors.
“I also believe that Lord Howe Island is now leading the way in showing communities on the mainland how they can become more self-sufficient by tapping into renewable energy.
“Congratulations to the Lord Howe Island Board for having the vision to drive this project and I look forward to seeing its progress when I visit the Island again later this year,” Mrs Williams said.
