Lord Howe Island Airport Funding Secure
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has welcomed the announcement that $4 million has now officially been secured by the Federal Coalition Government to reseal the Lord Howe Island Airport runway.
“I am very pleased that this important project can now continue and has been matched by a $4 million grant from the O’Farrell/Stoner State Government,” Mrs Williams said.
“In June 2013 I announced that State funding had been secured to reseal the airport runway, but that needed to be matched by the Commonwealth as well as other sources to fully fund the project.
“When it was announced that the Federal funding contracts had not been executed, I met with and wrote to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss requesting that this project be approved,” Mrs Williams said.
The Lord Howe Island airport upgrade was identified as a first order priority for the region in the 2013-16 Regional Plan produced by RDA Mid North Coast.
Tony Marshall, RDA Mid North Coast Chair said, “This is tremendous news for Lord Howe Island to secure an upgrade of vital infrastructure which supports their key industry of tourism. This is an excellent example of State and Federal government working together on identified regional priorities.”
Mrs Williams said, “The announcement that this has now been achieved is a great relief and means the multimillion dollar project can now proceed.
“The runway is a critical link for Lord Howe Island and resurfacing the runway is paramount to the island’s future tourism opportunities.
“I am sure that everyone on the Island is extremely happy with this news,” Mrs Williams said.
