Local Special Olympic Athletes Celebrated
Local athletes who competed in the Special Olympics in Melbourne last week were welcomed home with a celebration morning tea hosted by the Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams.
The athletes arrived back in Port Macquarie on Saturday night after competing at the Special Olympics Australia National Games in Melbourne.
Over 1,000 athletes of all abilities competed in 16 Olympic type sports.
“Our community can be very proud of the fantastic achievements of these athletes who brought home a swag of medals including 11 gold medals in singles, doubles and team events,” Mrs Williams said.
“Seeing the smile on the faces of these wonderful competitors is heart warming and I know their coaches, parents and carers are extremely pleased with their participation and performance.
“To win so many medals against other very talented athletes is testament to the years of training and dedication to their chosen sports.
“It is wonderful that these athletes who are so passionate about their sport have the opportunity to participate with others from across Australia,” Mrs Williams said.
The global mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability. Special Olympics provides them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy through participation.
