Local Residents Receive Free Legal Services
Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams today announced Legal Aid NSW is expected to open a new regional office in Port Macquarie in December.
Ms Williams said it will provide free legal services to disadvantaged residents across the Mid North Coast region from Taree and Forster to Kempsey.
“This is great news for residents on the Mid North Coast as it will allow Legal Aid NSW to improve the way it delivers its services to the region,” Mrs Williams said.
“Legal Aid currently provides a small number of outreach services in the area, but the new office will allow the agency to better support our growing population and increasing demand for free legal services.
“The office will employ 11 staff with a range of legal expertise in areas such as criminal law, family law, employment, child support, debt, housing and social security – issues that really impact on people’s everyday lives.
“Legal Aid will work closely with private practitioners and other legal service providers in the area to deliver services.
“The NSW Government is proud to be supporting the establishment of a dedicated Legal Aid office, which will greatly improve access to justice for vulnerable people along the Mid North Coast,” Mrs Williams said.
Legal Aid NSW will receive $260 million in public funding in 2014-15 – with $145.5 million coming from the NSW Government.
Legal Aid NSW was established in 1979 and is the largest legal aid agency in Australia, with a strong focus on helping people in need.
It provides assistance in resolving civil, family and criminal legal problems through its Sydney office, 20 regional offices and 184 regular outreach locations across the state.
