Honouring The Spirit Of ANZAC

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign and to commemorate the spirit of ANZAC, Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has produced an eight page booklet featuring stories of local diggers.

Mrs Williams said it is an honour to provide our community with a brochure dedicated to the Centenary of ANZAC.

“The brochure details accounts of local men who faced battle at Gallipoli including Lieutenant Alban Elliot who later became the Hastings longest serving Mayor, the Duck family of Kendall, Private Robert Laurie of Laurieton, Stan Hardes of Lansdowne and Gower Wilson of Lord Howe Island,” Mrs Williams said.

“The Spirit of ANZAC is designed to provide an insight into Australia’s military history and particularly the heroic contributions of brave men and women from the Port Macquarie electorate.

“Australians are proud people who respect tradition and honour great feats of bravery.

“It is this honour and respect that all Australians have for the ANZAC legend, a legend which was born amid fierce fighting at Gallipoli 100 years ago and which has since grown in spirit during wars and conflicts involving our country’s defence forces,” Mrs Williams said.

“I encourage the communities within the Port Macquarie electorate to embrace the Spirit of ANZAC at this special time.

“ANZAC Day is a time honoured tradition and an important part of this nation’s history and culture. It is a day to remember those who fought and those who died in war, it is a day we should all be proud to be Australian,” Mrs Williams said.

“This is the second booklet I have commissioned on our ANZACs and I know how much local residents appreciate reading about this important part of our local history.

"It is imperative that we learn about our history and the Gallipoli campaign was a defining moment in this country's development as a nation.

“While ANZAC Day commemorates the landing at Gallipoli in 1915, it is also a day to reflect and thank those who served in all conflicts that have enabled us to enjoy the freedom we have today,” Mrs Williams said.

A copy of the Spirit of ANZAC is being sent to each household in the Port Macquarie electorate.
