Boat Safety Signs

Boat Safety Signs

New boating safety signage will be installed at Westport Park and 39 other priority boat ramps across NSW in a project to increase boating safety and education.

Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said, “The NSW Government provided $55,000 for the project to improve and streamline boating safety signage across the State.

“Roads and Maritime Services is working with local councils including Port Macquarie-Hastings Council at key boat ramps and launching facilities to install the signs,” Mrs Williams said.

“Signage with older messages will be removed at the same time as the new signs are installed.

“This is the first time a collaborative approach has been taken to install advisory signs at boat ramps in NSW to streamline the experience for boating customers and help improve boating safety.

“The signs are tailored to local safety and boating issues at each of the 40 locations.

“Signs feature a combination of yellow and black diamond shaped icons to alert boaters about the need to keep to the right of the channel, to be aware of sudden weather changes, to observe narrow channels, to watch for overhead cables and to keep an eye out for paddle craft or other hazards,” Mrs Williams said.

“New signage also features boating safety messages, including reminders to wear a lifejacket, be safe going offshhore, use lights at night and propeller awareness.

“Roads and Maritime thanks project partners Fisheries NSW and Marine Rescue NSW for help in the planning and production of the signs. Messaging about the importance of logging an offshore trip and information about fishing restrictions and requirements also feature in the bottom of the new signs.”

Mrs Williams said icons on the new signs are interchangeable and can be updated or changed in the event of changed conditions or if a boating campaign is being carried out.

New signage will be rolled out to remaining boat ramps in the coming months.
